THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL: THE RISE OF THE COMMUNITY

Someone asked me the other day, "What do you think the social media trends of 2024 will be? There are so many platforms, what's the go? *immediately blows the dust off BeReal & Threads*

Social is having a RENAISSANCE: from creators with influence to “Whitelisting”, IG Channels & X - it's all for the COMMUNITY.

Social (the brands, the way we think about and use them, the creators) is going through, what can only be described as, a ✨ RENAISSANCE ✨ (no not the Beyoncé kind...) - let me explain

👨🏽‍🎨 CREATORS WITH INFLUENCE: Gone are the days of 'influencers' and superficial content. We're in a new era where creators mobilise their communities. There's a significant difference between an influencer/creator (standalone) and a creator WITH influence. Being a creator is about crafting great work, but being a creator WITH INFLUENCE is about INSPIRING your COMMUNITY to not just want to ~be you~, but, BE LIKE you - think skills, less vanity. In short: AUTHENTICITY & RELATABILITY.

🤝 THE UNEXPECTED COLLAB: Not Barbie and the billion brands. WHITELABEL COLLABS/CONTENT. We're in a space where creator content is ad content; Elevating creator content into ads without losing the creator's voice - coming from them but boosted by the brand. It’s an interesting shift towards GREYTHENTICITY (grey authenticity), a collab between a brand and a creator but not quite - it’s a deceptively smart ad format that's ultimately a win; Brands get engaging convertible ads 🤝 creators make money talking to their community.

📺 CHANNEL SURFING: The latest addition of IG Channels brings a twist to engaging fans but it's more like a community message board and by that I mean - a great way to form a focus group, based on reactions. It's an interesting approach to a social platform, considering there’s no ~actual~ engagement, but what it does is give creators is another organic reach mechanic. For brands, the value is yet to be seen...unless you find a way to add value! Spare your social team the hassle and just start a Facebook group instead.

THE RISE, FALL AND RISE (?) OF X & THREADS: The age-old “we don’t use twi…X, we don’t get it” - Twitter (X) was one of the first to introduce live video and still has it (RIP Periscope and Meerkat), has live audio (name another platform that does that isn't radio streaming or podcast) and you can still upload whatever content you want - can threads compete? I mean, they’ll try. EITHER WAY, they both serve the core purpose of CONVERSATION and COMMUNITY (not just for customer complaints) - if you want to understand the platform(s), USE IT!

🎥 KEEP ROLLING: Live streaming is a BEAST, from Twitch to TikTok Lives. It's (still) the future and I've been saying it since 2014. Driven by creators and (yet to be fully) embraced by brands. Above all, it's about fostering a strong COMMUNITY.
